A New Year-Le verger est Ouvert

Une Nouvelle Annee-Orchard is open!

[Edit]

LE VERGER EST OUVERT- UNE NOUVELLE ANNEE

We are happy to be back, blogging about our wonderful, historic, and diverse orchard. The harvest of 2017 has begun and we apologize for not writing earlier but we become so immersed that we forget! However, not much point in having lovely apples, veggies and pottery without notifying our clientel!

We opened Saturday, August 5th, just two days ago. As everyone knows all too well, it was a very wet and cold spring. Despite the trials that that kind of weather brings to an orchard and gardens, the apples and veggies are coming along.

This week- first apples of the season. Cette semaine-les priemiers pommes de l’annee.

Vista Bella– as with all summer apples the vista bellas are unpredictable. Some will be very soft and sweet and other crunchy and tart. Great for eating and apple sauce.

IMG_0017

Yellow Transparent (La Pomme Blanche)-very well known early eating and cooking apples. All the older folk swear by the yellows for pies, crisps and just eating. IMG_0024

Duchess (La Duchesse)- an amazing cooking apple. Years ago there was a Duchess on every farm. Not great to eat, but the best of all the apples, winter or summer, for cooking crisps and pies.

IMG_0023And, of course, the veggies are starting to come in. The new potatoesIMG_0026 are wonderful this year as are the zuchinis.

Ainsi, les legumes arrivent a l’heure. Les pommes de terres nouveaux et les zuchinis sont super.IMG_0029There is an amazing selection of pottery this year.  Lynn has been experimenting with wood and gas firing so some glazes are very different while the much loved electric colours of cone 6 are still here. Come and look.IMG_20150714_170007

Apples on Weekends

We have a good supply of great tasting apples from this years harvest in refrigerated storage. Empire, Spartan, Cortland and MacIntosh-the keepers- will be available, along with fresh pressed cider, on weekends. People were still out picking in the orchard Saturday and Sunday. These apples MAY not keep as well as the ones in the fridge, but the taste is incredible. Just ask Max. img_0219

Eden Ice Cider, the Newport specialty cider company, took three large batches of cider for next year’s offerings. Last year’s batches from our apples had rave reviews and the entire summer cider batch was sold outright. We are still hoping  for a taste of that one! Have you ever felt like making hard cider? Give us a call. Happy Thanksgiving to our American neighbors and thanks to all who have come to our orchard this summer/fall.

We still have buttercup squash and garlic from our gardens, and Lynn’s pottery will be at the stand for one more weekend. 300916-006

I’ll be doing a few songs in Montreal on Saturday, Nov. 12th, for the 50th anniversary of the Yellow Door Coffee house, the longest running Folk venue in Canada, and possibly North America. Also, on Saturday, I get auctioned off for a house concert to raise money for the Massawippi Valley Health Care Centre. Time to change hats.

Apples in Late October! Oct.21, 2016

Yes, indeed, we still have apples, all varieties. Some lovely apples still on the trees, and many in the kiosk. Don’t be fooled by the nasty weather this weekend, come on and get your apples! Max wasn’t put off. Max, our nephew, is our new orchard mascot. He loves wandering the orchard, picking apples, checking out the gourds and relaxing in the squash and pumpkins.img_0251This is a real orchard, he says!!img_0216img_0241

Thanksgiving was wonderful, but is is not the end! We will have apples through October, November and, maybe, into December.

And don’t forget the squash, delicious this year, pumpkins, pie and scary, honey, jams, apple cider, and, of course, pottery. The pottery will be making its annual trip back to Toronto for the Toronto shows in a couple of weeks. Buy that pot soon!

Hope to see you. Lynn and Chris.

We Love School Groups

We had a school group from Vermont last week. Such a pleasure to see them so full of joie de vivre, many picking their apples (with a little guidance) for the first time. Their questions and their answers to my questions are always interesting, sometimes enlightening.

260916-007

At the orchard this week we have added 3 new varieties to the mix:

Spartan: a sweet apple, very crunchy, not too big-unless you look hard-one of the best apples for drying.

Shamrock: a green apple with blush of dawn. Sweet and somewhat reminiscent of a MacIntosh.

Red Max: A larger apple, very red, somewhat tart, good for eating, and cooking. Easy pick!

There are still loads of MacIntosh, Cortland and Lobo, as well as some Joyce, Paula Red, Gala, St Lawrence and Summer Granny.

The squash are continuing their amazing season. The Buttercup have produced an average of 4 squash per plant.150916-004

Here is Bella guarding some of Lynn’s pottery. She would rather be swimming. Most of the pottery is inside the stand with the honey, maple products, jams and jellies, 30 or so bushels of squash and a selection of Chris’ 10 recordings.260916-009

Daniel Heath’s mushroom farm is continuing to produce Shiitake and Oyster mushrooms. Get them while they are fresh. (or dried)260916-008

For those of you who ordered John Heath’s Chinook salmon, the fish will be at the orchard Saturday morning.

Hope to see you in the next few weeks. We are thankful to have something good to offer this year. Drop by for a visit, a pick or a chat.260916-004
