Apples in Late October! Oct.21, 2016

Yes, indeed, we still have apples, all varieties. Some lovely apples still on the trees, and many in the kiosk. Don’t be fooled by the nasty weather this weekend, come on and get your apples! Max wasn’t put off. Max, our nephew, is our new orchard mascot. He loves wandering the orchard, picking apples, checking out the gourds and relaxing in the squash and pumpkins.img_0251This is a real orchard, he says!!img_0216img_0241

Thanksgiving was wonderful, but is is not the end! We will have apples through October, November and, maybe, into December.

And don’t forget the squash, delicious this year, pumpkins, pie and scary, honey, jams, apple cider, and, of course, pottery. The pottery will be making its annual trip back to Toronto for the Toronto shows in a couple of weeks. Buy that pot soon!

Hope to see you. Lynn and Chris.

We Love School Groups

We had a school group from Vermont last week. Such a pleasure to see them so full of joie de vivre, many picking their apples (with a little guidance) for the first time. Their questions and their answers to my questions are always interesting, sometimes enlightening.

260916-007

At the orchard this week we have added 3 new varieties to the mix:

Spartan: a sweet apple, very crunchy, not too big-unless you look hard-one of the best apples for drying.

Shamrock: a green apple with blush of dawn. Sweet and somewhat reminiscent of a MacIntosh.

Red Max: A larger apple, very red, somewhat tart, good for eating, and cooking. Easy pick!

There are still loads of MacIntosh, Cortland and Lobo, as well as some Joyce, Paula Red, Gala, St Lawrence and Summer Granny.

The squash are continuing their amazing season. The Buttercup have produced an average of 4 squash per plant.150916-004

Here is Bella guarding some of Lynn’s pottery. She would rather be swimming. Most of the pottery is inside the stand with the honey, maple products, jams and jellies, 30 or so bushels of squash and a selection of Chris’ 10 recordings.260916-009

Daniel Heath’s mushroom farm is continuing to produce Shiitake and Oyster mushrooms. Get them while they are fresh. (or dried)260916-008

For those of you who ordered John Heath’s Chinook salmon, the fish will be at the orchard Saturday morning.

Hope to see you in the next few weeks. We are thankful to have something good to offer this year. Drop by for a visit, a pick or a chat.260916-004

Joyce-still some left to pick, more at the stand.

Wolf River-this heritage apple is now ripe and ready for baking, drying or cider making. Eating as a desert apple not so much.190916-006

Wealthy-an off year for this variety, still some to sample.

Fresh cider on hand. lots of pottery.

open daily 9-5,

Apple Picking Weather Arrives! Sept. 15-23

Finally, we have some real apple picking weather, sunny, cool, beautiful! Fall is clearly coming but summer is clinging on and that makes for lovely weather.

The apples are continuing to ripen but slowly- which is really what you want!

This week you can pick:

Macintosh- coming into their own. Crunchy, still a little tart but with that real Mac flavour. Good for eating and cooking.150916-008

Paula Red-still available. Not huge amounts but, when you get them, they are amazing. Good for eating and cooking.

Lobo-this apple is many people’s favourite. A distinct flavour, sweet and juicy. Great for apple sauce particularly. An amazing eating apple

Summer Granny- a green apple- similar to the Granny Smith

Joyce- still can be found. The best cooking apple until the Cortland come in. They keep their shape in pies and have a tart, very appley, flavour.

Kerr Crabs- not a lot left, so if you are hoping to make crab apple jelly, come now.

The squash are really coming in now. They are delicious this year and will be even better now that we are getting the cold nights. 150916-003Pie pumpkins are also available- practice whipping up your pumpkin pie before Thanksgiving.

Lots of new jams, jellies, honey, maple syrup, baked goods and many other wonderful things at the stand.

The pottery is looking great, come and browse!20151012_141748_resized

Apples/Garlic and Squash Galore! Sept 9th-16th

Hard to believe that it has been yet another week of intense heat. Luckily, we have also had some rain which the apples, squash and pumpkins are soaking up gratefully!

New this week!

Macintosh- yes, the Macs are now coming in. They are just beginning but they are crunchy, tart and delicious.blog shots 2016-09 030

Kerr Crab Apples- are now ready. We are picking a lot of these for a special hard cidre being made by the Eden Cidre people, so if you want them for your jelly, or baked crabs, come soon.

Ongoing.

Paula Red- the Paula Red are on their way out. You can still find some if you really look and they are wonderful, but these are the last of these apples for this year.

Lobo- are at their best. They are now sweet, crunchy and great for eating or cooking.

Joyce- just for cooking- but the Joyce make excellent pie and crisps. They keep their shape and are tart so give that real apple flavour. Also at the end of these, so come soon.

Summer Granny-these are the green apples that are somewhat like a Granny Smith. Good for cooking and eating.

Other Goodies.

We have just harvested our garden full of garlic. It is Music garlic which is really special-very garlicy, but not harsh. You really have to try it! blog shots 2016-09 023We also dug all our potatoes and they, also, are exceptional this year. We store them and usually eat our last potato around March. The squash and pie pumpkins are in at the kiosk in bushels! Wonderful this year as the heat seemed to really help them along.  As always, pick your own veggies.

New Pottery at the kiosk as well as new jams, jellies, pickles(including the famous ‘best bread and butter pickles ever’) Come and check it out!pottery-and-squash

Verger Heath-01/09-08/09
